Pregnancy and birth can greatly impact our physical and mental wellbeing. Add to that lack of sleep with a newborn and adapting to our ‘new normal’ and it is to be expected that certain aspects of our overall health take time to recover.
The first (and most important) part of reconnecting with your body after a C-section is to be kind to yourself.
You are an amazing human, who grew and gave birth.
Your body did an amazing thing.
You might not have had the birth experience you had dreamed of initially, but you did it.
You are a super mum who will continue to do amazing things as your little one grows.

Before exploring the physical aspects of reconnecting with your body, it can be important to recognise that reframing your birth experience can be a powerful tool in your post-C-section recovery. Your birth experience, regardless of how it unfolded, brought your precious baby into the world. By reframing it as a testament to your resilience and the love you have for your child, you can find empowerment and gratitude.
After a C-section your body starts an amazing healing process. Getting familiar with the typical stages of the physical recovery process is important. The first part of the healing journey will probably be focused on caring for your incision and managing any discomfort you may be feeling. It’s important that you prioritise rest and allow your body the time it needs to heal. If you have family or friends around you at this time don’t be ashamed to rely on them to help you look after the baby. Over time you will notice that your scar is starting to heal and it is important to be patient during this time as scar healing takes time and varies from person to person. Remember, your body has undergone a significant transformation and rushing the healing process can slow down your overall recovery.
During the recovery stage it is important to acknowledge that you may experience pain in the incision site and surrounding areas. However, if you experience severe or persistent pain it is important to contact your GP or health professional. Although rare, infections can occur so pay close attention to any redness, swelling or discharge around the scar.
As soon as you feel ready (and know it is safe to do so) you will find it beneficial to your mental and physical health to start walking, gently stretching and completing pelvic floor exercises. As you carefully listen to your body you will be able to gradually increase your activity levels as you regain strength.
As you become more familiar and comfortable with your body post-birth, you will be able to view your scar in a new narrative and over time will view your C-section scar as a powerful symbol of strength and resilience. Emotionally and physically, accepting and embracing your scar can be a transformative step in your post-C-section recovery. It's important to remember that scars are a natural part of the healing process and can be a source of pride rather than shame. Massaging your
scar daily not only helps how the scar looks but will help you connect with your scar and recognise it as part of your journey.
